The Journey

The River Wye and the Wye Valley will perhaps be the best known area of Herefordshire. In fact, the Wye starts over in Mid Wales and meanders its way through Herefordshire and the Welsh border, into our beautiful southern region of the county and then back out down to the Severn Estuary.

The water's route takes it through several market towns, including, to the south, the sandstone cliff-top settlement of Ross-on-Wye, known as the birthplace of British tourism. Ross can rightly boast to have the first tourist built hotel in the country to accommodate those undertaking the 'Wye Tour' in the eighteenth century – the British equivalent to the European Grand Tour. So bring your sketch pad and paints to make the most of this areas 'Picturesque' beauty.

With panoramic views, the streets of Ross tumble like the strands of a maypole from the highest point at the 13th century church and its almshouses to the Tudor buildings, stone pillared market place right down to its riverside pubs and hotels. For shopping, the town is dotted with independent retailers and a just outside sits a large clothing and home outlet, Labels, ideal for the designer bargain hunter. Further south Symonds Yat is an activity enthusiast's heaven, putting the Wye and its banks to full use with rock climbing, water sports and ferries, amazing walks and picnic spots and a plethora of watering holes and restaurants. Add to that the Amazing Hedge Puzzle maze and Butterfly Zoo and you won't be short of occupation.

While Ross tells important stories about its historical residents through interesting street trails following plaques and monuments, it also gives convenient access to a wealth of visual attractions like the surrounding castles of Wilton, Bollitree and Goodrich, but only 20 minutes away to the north is the City and another more celestial treat.

“Very nice guest house next to church in sunny Ross on Wye”

We were very delighted to have stayed with Patrick. He was an excellent host and made us all feel very welcome. It's in a great location next to the church and just a one minute walk away from the town centre with lots of nice shops and places to eat and drink. I hope to stay again soon.
